Wharton Social Impact Initiative

Investment Type: Grant
Year: 2018, 2019
Amount: $193,000
Organization Type: Non-profit

The Wharton Social Impact Initiative (WSII) is Wharton’s cross-disciplinary center for research, training, and outreach to strengthen business-based solutions to social and environmental challenges. Its mission is to build the evidence, talent, and community to advance business solutions for a better world.

Why we invest:

Tara Health provided a grant to WSII to conduct research and develop an evidence-based framework to use in evaluating companies’ impact on the women they employ. Based on the review and synthesis of hundreds of academic studies – rigorous, independent, peer-reviewed studies of diverse industries, employers, and locations – WSII developed a framework that identifies the critical outcomes that determine the impact that a company has on the women it employs. Read the report, Four for Women: A Framework for Evaluating Companies’ Impact on the Women They Employ, which was released in late 2018. These four outcomes include: Representation, pay, health, and satisfaction. The intention of the framework is that it will contribute to a growth in the number of companies that are good, even great, employers for women.
