TIAA Investments has been a leader in responsible investing since the 1970s. Its Proactive Social Investing (PSI) framework was formalized in 2012 and provides a tool for communicating expectations around environmental and social impact of investment opportunities. The PSI framework operates on the premise that both positive societal impact and positive relative value for investors are necessary criteria for including a security in the PSI category. PSI has four thematic areas: affordable housing, community and economic development, renewable energy and climate change, and natural resources.
Why we invest:
The majority of public impact investing opportunities focus on equity asset classes. TIAA Investments has developed a compelling model for diversified impact-oriented investments in new asset classes, such as fixed-income securities. We are inspired by TIAA’s creativity in approaching social bonds: PSI goes beyond traditional screenings that exclude investments with negative impacts, instead constructing metrics around societal benefits.
